PROTECTING KIDS ONLINE

eBullying / Cyber Bullying

What is eBullying or Cyber Bullying?
It is the same old thing brought into the new age. The main difference is that in the past you were face to face with your attacker. Today they are mainly cowards hiding behind the anonymity of the internet. This can make it scarier for the child because they don't know who it is.

What are the symptoms that your child is being bullied online (this can include phone text message bullying):
  • Trouble sleeping
  • Loss of appetite or throwing up
  • No interest in attending social events that include other students
  • Fear of leaving the house
  • Behavioral changes
  • Complains of being sick before school or a school event
  • Aggressive at home
  • Grades going down
  • Secretive about Internet and phone activities
  • Closes program windows on their computer when you enter the room
  • Long hours on the computer

What can you do if your child is being bullied online?
  • Learn to talk with your child about it
  • Pump up your child's self-esteem. Bullying usually erodes it
  • Know what your child is doing online
  • Use software to monitor and block it
  • Try to track down the culprit. It is usually difficult to track do so
  • If your child is being bullied via email, change his/her address
  • If your child is being bullied via Instant Messaging (IM) software such as ICQ, MSN Messenger, AOL Instant Messenger etc., you can 'Block', 'Ignore' or 'Ban' the cyber bully. You can also change your child's screen name / sign in name
  • If your child is a victim of a cyber bully who has set up and Web site that is defaming your child, notify the Internet Service Provider about what is happening. It is also a good idea to notify the police. You may be able to use the "WHOIS" search tool to lead you to the culprit (assuming they don't make it a private domain).
